Lake Temperatures
LAKE TEMPERATURE is key in maximizing your ability to catch Largemouth Bass like the pros. One of the most important things to remember about lake temperature is the fact that fish feed better in certain temperatures. Knowing the best temperature that bass feed helps make sure you have the best chance to catch fish. Some professional bass fishermen use thermometers to test the lake temperature and is one of the factors taken into consideration when fishing to help indicate good fishing opportunities.
Remember, water temperature changes from winter to spring and the change in temperature is usually a good indicator of the feeding activity of Largemouth bass. For example, bass like to feed in temperatures between 68-80 degrees, so it the water temperature is either too high ie. 50 degrees Fahrenheit or lower, it may be a good indicator that the bass may not be feeding. On the other hand, if the water temperature is too high, ie. over 80 degrees Fahrenheit, then the water may be too warm and the fish may not be feeding either. There is a typical best zone for any given species of fish and knowing this will help the beginner angler to be better prepared to catch that extreme largemouth bass of a lifetime.
The simple thermometer – usually available for $10 or less – is a great tool for any angler to have as part of the standard equiptment and can be just as important as a rod and reel. There are a variety of different thermometers and just about anyone will do. You don’t need anything fancy, but your choices range from traditional household to digital. The key is that it needs to be water proof and consists of a standard glass tube which is encased in a protective metal sleeve. Most models have a ring that allows a string to be tied so the thermometer can be lowered into the lake to the desired depth.
Remember, lake temperature can be a good clue to enhance your chances of catching Largemouth bass and make your day fruitful, but just because the water temperature is not the “perfect” temperature does not mean you won’t catch any fish. The whole purpose of fishing is to fish and getting out there is half the fun, don’t rely on just one piece of equiptment too heavily, just fish and have a great day.
